DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor and Record Vital Signs:
- Continuously assess patients’ heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, and blood pressure.
- Detect early signs of deterioration and promptly alert the medical team.
- Maintain accurate, real-time charting and documentation.
Administer Medications and Intravenous Therapies:
- Safely administer prescribed medications via oral, intravenous (IV), or other routes.
- Monitor for and manage any adverse drug reactions or side effects.
- Adjust dosages as per protocol or physician instructions in emergency situations.
Operate and Manage Life Support Systems:
- Manage and troubleshoot equipment such as ventilators, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and cardiac monitors.
- Assist in the intubation and extubation of patients as required.
- Monitor patients on mechanical ventilation and ensure oxygen therapy is optimized.
Provide Specialized Critical Care:
- Deliver intensive nursing care to patients with severe illnesses, including trauma, sepsis, cardiac issues, or post-operative complications.
- Execute care plans for patients in a coma or with neurological deficits.
- Turn, reposition, and perform hygiene for immobile patients to prevent complications.
Emergency Response:
- React promptly and effectively to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or sudden deterioration.
- Participate in Code Blue and other emergency protocols, performing CPR and other life-saving procedures.
- Assist physicians during emergency procedures or surgeries.
Collaborate with the Multidisciplinary Team:
- Participate in daily ICU rounds, presenting patient updates and advocating for care interventions.
- Coordinate with physicians, physiotherapists, lab technicians, and nutritionists to support holistic care.
- Communicate effectively with family members, providing updates and emotional support.
Patient Observation and Reporting:
- Regularly assess patient consciousness, pain levels, and neurological status.
- Document and report any changes in patient condition, unusual symptoms, or complications.
- Maintain thorough and confidential patient records, in line with hospital policies.
Maintain Infection Control and Safety Protocols:
- Ensure sterile techniques during all procedures.
- Adhere strictly to hospital infection control measures including hand hygiene, PPE usage, and disposal of biohazard materials.
- Report and help contain any hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
Support Patient and Family Education:
- Educate families on ICU protocols, visitation rules, and patient condition.
- Provide guidance on post-ICU care when patients are transferred or discharged.
- Offer emotional support and involve families in care decisions where appropriate.
Contribute to Professional Development and Team Training:
- Attend ICU-related training sessions, workshops, and courses.
- Support mentoring and orientation of new ICU nurses and students.
- Stay updated on best practices in critical care nursing.
KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution
- Registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and in good standing
- At least 1–2 years of experience working in an ICU or critical care setting (preferred)
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
