DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Planning & Strategy:
- Develop and manage the annual farm budget, aligning financial goals with operational objectives.
- Provide strategic financial advice to senior management, ensuring alignment with the farm's growth objectives and sustainability goals.
- Conduct long-term financial forecasting to support capital planning, equipment purchases, and expansion strategies.
Financial Analysis & Reporting:
- Prepare detailed monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit and loss statements, cash flow statements, balance sheets, and variance analysis.
- Conduct detailed cost analysis of farm production activities, such as crop or livestock management, input costs, labor costs, and operational overheads.
- Assess the financial impact of operational decisions and advise management on cost-effective practices.
Cash Flow Management:
- Oversee cash flow management, ensuring that the farm maintains adequate liquidity to meet financial obligations and operational needs.
- Monitor accounts receivable and payable, ensuring timely collection of payments and vendor management to maintain cash flow balance.
- Evaluate and manage financial risks related to cash flow fluctuations and seasonal revenue cycles.
Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations, farm subsidies, and agricultural industry-specific financial requirements.
- Liaise with external auditors and regulatory authorities for financial audits and reporting.
- Manage farm-specific financial compliance issues, including subsidies, grants, and tax incentives relevant to agricultural operations.
Cost Control & Efficiency:
- Identify areas for cost reduction and efficiency improvement within farm operations.
- Develop and implement effective cost-control strategies, particularly in the procurement of agricultural inputs, equipment, and labor.
- Track and monitor the efficiency of resource usage, ensuring that operational costs remain within budget.
Financial Systems Management:
- Implement and maintain farm accounting software and systems that cater specifically to agricultural businesses.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data and ensure that systems are up to date with industry standards.
- Provide training and support to farm staff on financial systems and reporting processes.
Team Leadership & Collaboration:
- Lead and mentor a small team of finance and accounting professionals, providing guidance on farm-specific financial operations.
- Collaborate with the operations, procurement, and farm management teams to ensure financial plans align with day-to-day farming activities.
- Facilitate the communication between the finance department and other departments, ensuring clarity on financial matters.
Agricultural Investment Management:
- Assist in evaluating and managing investments in farm infrastructure, machinery, technology, and land acquisitions.
- Support decision-making for financial investments, taking into account both short-term needs and long-term growth.
Risk Management:
- Evaluate and mitigate financial risks associated with agricultural production cycles, including crop failure, weather-related risks, commodity price fluctuations, and labor shortages.
- Develop contingency plans for financial stability during periods of economic downturn or market volatility.
KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Degree in Finance, Accounting, Agriculture Economics, or a related field.
- At least 5-7 years of experience in a finance role, with a focus on agricultural or farm-based financial management
- Proven experience in budget preparation, financial forecasting, cash flow management, and financial reporting in a farm or agricultural business setup
- Experience working with farm accounting software, financial tools, and systems.
- Knowledge of agricultural economics, cost analysis, and financial implications of farming operations
- Strong knowledge of financial analysis, reporting, and budgeting principles, with the ability to tailor strategies to a farm environment.
- Ability to manage and lead a finance team effectively, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in financial software
