JOB SUMMARY
The Technical Assistant will provide support in establishment and management of FEP projects. This includes Nursery, Smallholder Micro nurseries, company’s Demo farm, smallholder demo farms and farmer related activities (Seed nuts booking, seedling distribution and follow-up, seedling payment, holding of demonstration days e.t.c).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Nursery & Demo Farm Management
- Establish and manage Kentaste’s nursery and demonstration farms.
- Supervise all nursery and demo farm activities (Kentaste and smallholder), ensuring efficiency,
- compliance with standards, and adherence to good agricultural practices.
- Monitor propagation, germination, and growth data for coconut seedlings at Kentaste Nursery.
- Develop and oversee irrigation, nutrition, crop protection, and weeding schedules.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare attendance records and requisitions for casual worker payments at the nursery and demo
- Compile and submit weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports on nursery and
- demo farm performance.
- Maintain databases on marked mother plants, seedlings under propagation, distributed seedlings,
- and smallholder demo farms.
Farmer & Casual Worker Training
- Train casuals and farmers on nursery management practices (e.g., mother plant identification,
- seed nut selection) and coconut tree husbandry.
- Conduct trainings for Field Officers and Buying Clerks on best agricultural practices, research
- findings, and trial results.
- Support preparation and delivery of farmer demonstration days at Kentaste Demo Farm.
- Create digital content for use in farmer training and extension activities.
Farmer & Field Engagement
- Monitor farmer seedling progress through Appsheet Software and share regular
- (weekly/monthly) reports.
- Support follow-up on mother plant bookings and seedling bookings with farmers in coordination
- with Field Officers and the FEP Supervisor.
- Assist in identifying and establishing smallholder farmer demo farms and micro-nurseries, and
- follow up on their management.
KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Diploma/Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Science, or related field.
- Minimum 3-5 years in crop propagation, nursery management, or demo farm management (tree crops, horticulture, or perennials)
- Experience working with smallholder farmers and running extension/training programs
- Previous exposure to data systems for agriculture (digital tools, mobile reporting) is an added advantage
- Licenced motorbike rider
- Willingness to travel frequently within the Coast region
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili (local language an added advantage)
- Strong commitment to sustainability and farmer capacity-building
